In 1985, 13-year-old Sherry Shepherd battled multiple recurrences of non-Hodgkin lymphoma as the first pediatric oncology patient at UMass Memorial Medical Center. In the last months of her life, Sherry became determined to do something that would have a lasting value in the community to help children with cancer. With the help of her dad, she founded the non-profit organization Why Me & Sherry’s House, which stands for “Worcester Help for Youth, Memories Everlasting.”
As the organization prepares to recognize 40 years of providing programs, services and events for children and their families experiencing a childhood cancer diagnosis, this wonderful article in The Worcester Guardian tells the story about Sherry and how her legacy continues.
Learn more about the organization by joining me and my friends from Why Me Sherry’s House on Saturday, May 3, at the AC Hotel in downtown Worcester as we raise vital funds for local children bravely fighting cancer in our community.
